he BSAVA Small Animal Formulary has firmly secured its place as one of the most valued BSAVA publications, whether that be in print in practice pharmacies, via the BSAVA app or the BSAVA library. It is considered a ‘must-have’ by students, primary care clinicians and specialists alike, and is a key membership benefit.

The ability to rapidly obtain accurate, reviewed and current information on an extensive range of medications including available formulations, licensing data, action, uses, dose rates, contraindications, drug interactions and adverse reaction risks alongside safety and handling information in a simple alphabetical format makes this an incredibly user-friendly resource.

The 11th edition has been fully updated and sees an additional 20 new drug monographs added to the Formulary, with an indication of which species each drug is authorized in where relevant. There is a clearer indication of which drugs are available as reformulations from veterinary specials manufacturers. A new section detailing sedation for dogs with the ABCB1 gene provides an important update for improved safety in sedation and anaesthesia for affected patients.

An important addition is a clear visual indicator on every antibiotic to clearly show its European Medicines Agency (EMA) category accompanied by expanded guidelines in the appendix explaining the EMA categories and promoting responsible use of antibiotics to protect public and animal health. In tandem with this there is a new appendix with guidance on the responsible use of parasiticides in companion animal practice.
