Infectious diseases represent one of the most dynamic areas of veterinary practice. They range from common, self-limiting infections to rare, emerging, or re-emerging diseases with potentially severe consequences for individual patients and their owners.The increasing movement of dogs, changing vector distributions, evolving pathogen ecology, and the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance have further added to the complexity of diagnosing, treating, and preventing infectious diseases in canine patients.

 

Accurate diagnosis and effective management of canine infectious diseases require far more than knowledge of individual pathogens. They demand a good understanding of host–pathogen interactions, epidemiology, and pathogenesis, combined with sound clinical judgement and a structured diagnostic approach. Equally important are rational therapeutic strategies and an awareness of antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control principles, both at the level of the individual patient and within the veterinary clinic.
